The Uptown Saint John BIA is located on the traditional unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik, Mi’kmaq, and Peskotomuhkati peoples in Saint John, historically known as Menaquesk. This territory is covered by the Peace and Friendship Treaties, which the Wolastoqiyik, Mi’kmaq, Penobscot, and Passamaquoddy peoples first signed with the British Crown in 1725. The treaties did not deal with the surrender of lands and resources, but in fact recognized Wolastoqey, Mi’kmaq, Penobscot, and Passamaquoddy title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations. We are all treaty people and have a responsibility to act as such.
