We are happy to have 1778 Trading Post as part of the Uptown Saint John Business Improvement Association! It is owned and operated by Edwin Bernard, a Tobique First Nations councillor and leader in his community for over 30 years, and his daughter, Kortni Bernard. The name is in reference to the treaty signed in 1778 at Fort Howe. The 1778 Trading Post is an Indigenous owned retail and operates as a tax-free treaty business that showcases Indigenous artists and craftspeople from across the country including Mi’kmaq, Maliseet, and more!
As you enter the shop, you’ll be welcomed by Edwin Bernard, Kortni Bernard, Cody Knockwood, or another warm and friendly staff member. They’re all happy to help answer any questions and love sharing the stories behind the handmade items in the store. New products are frequently introduced, and many display information that shares the artist’s story. You’ll discover a range of Indigenous made products, such as stunning ribbon dresses, detailed beaded jewelry, hand-poured soy candles, and beautifully made leather bags. The shelves also have sacred medicines (like sweetgrass and white sage), Manitobah moccasins, and a selection of 1778 apparel, including cozy hoodies and stylish hats.
Whether you’re looking for a unique gift or something for yourself, visit the 1778 Trading Post and immerse yourself in the vibrant world of Indigenous art and culture.
