Last week we welcomed Adoringly Shire as a new member of the Uptown Saint John BIA. We are so happy to see this great resource in the neighbourhood!
Adoringly Shire; is a queer+allies community club that offers a safe space for youth every school day. Whether eating their own meal or one offered at the Shire, this green, calm little home is a place of healing where money never changes hands.
Alice and her wife (the organizers of Adoringly Shire) healed a lot off-grid in a forest last year for 7 months. They wanted to bring the forest to the Uptown. Both are teachers who identified the need for spaces like this in the community.
Throughout the day this space serves many different purposes. During noon hour it is a space for youths to enjoy their lunch and has DIY sandwiches from Slocum and Ferris. Then during the early afternoon, they offer peer support sessions for trans and non-binary youth. From 3:30 pm to 5 pm, it becomes a youth safe space with an art room, game room, dressing room, reading nook, homework office, and pantry.
In the evening from 5 pm to 8 pm, it opens up into an all-ages BYOBF “restaurant” (Bring your own beverages or food).
Many community members have stepped forward to support this fantastic initiative and they are always looking for other community partners to keep this space vibrant! Everything in the space is upcycled and donated by the community; from the couches to the food.
