Saturday stroll with David Goss, Wall Street of Canada, September 23

Saturday Stroll on Saturday, September 23, 2023. At 2:00 p.m. Discover why Prince William Street was known as the Wall Street of Canada on this walk from the Partridge Island Publishing Bookstore in the Container Village. The walk will travel up Duke to Prince William and conclude at the foot of King. Walkers will discover how the street developed following the Great Fire and how the businesses flourished as a result of port activity that gave locals a business advantage over central Canada and the Eastern USA and led to the proliferation of insurance and investment houses. The Fee is $10.00.

Frightful Friday on Friday, Sept 15, 2023, at 8 p.m. The Ghost of John comes to Saint John. Leaving from the Partridge Island Publishing Bookstore at the Container Village. This walk feature John Nathanial Leavitt the ghost of Dead Man’s Cove, who was lost in the sinking of the barque Genii during the Saxby Gale of October 04, 1869. He will be sharing stories of how he has interacted with ghosts all up and down the Fundy shore in attempting to get someone to take him to be buried with his buddies who are all at rest in graves in Mascarene. This 1.5-hour program will feature a costumed ghost, and he has a number of stunts that help illustrate his story as we walk Water and Prince William Streets overlooking the harbour. The fee is $15.00

Saturday Stroll on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Not History but Her Story. Women have made many notable contributions to the betterment of Saint John. On this walk, we’ll learn about how a woman got the Y got started in the city, how the playground movement owes its origin to a Saint John woman, how the city had the first port nurse in the world and how seafarers loved Saint John because two woman volunteers who made them feel at home when far from home. The walk will leave from the Partridge Island Publishing Bookstore in the Container Village and travel through Trinity Royal for 1.5 hours. The fee is $10.00.

Saturday Stroll on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Prince William Street in Fact and Folklore. No city street has as many stories as Prince William. The city’s first newspaper was founded on the street, Canada’s first bank was too, and the street has a coffee house long before Tim Horton’s came to town. The street is said to have underground tunnels connecting buildings, and some women claim one of the city’s most eligible bachelors of 1884 still winks at them as they pass by Chubb’s Corner. Come and wonder why the devil is spitting out coins, learn who won a radiator sitting contest when Saint John High opened, and what building was once sold for two wheelbarrows of Mexican dollars at Lazy Man’s Corner. The fee is $10.00. If wet, call 506 672 8601 after 1:00 p.m.

All participants must register in advance. Pre-registration by contacting Shannon@PartridgeIslandPublishing.ca. Payment can be made by cash, E-transfer, Debit and Credit cards. Day-of-walk registrations ( $2.00 more) will be accepted if space allows. Limited to 30 walkers.
If wet call 506 672 8601 one hour before the walk to check if it is on, or rescheduled 24 hours later.
