Uptown Mug #86 . Mike Capson

Mike Capson is one of those guys.  You know, we all have heard of him and see him around, but he has just the right amount of mystery to make us curious.  Mike is one of the cool kids on the block at ICS Creative Agency – but that is just his day job.  He is also a master photographer and philanthropist with a heart to make our community better.

Let’s get to know Mike:

Where were you born/Where are you from?
I was born in Saint John, New Brunswick. I grew up and attended high school in Rothesay. Then after graduating my family moved to East Saint John while I attended UNBSJ.

How long have you been a part of the uptown scene?
I’ve been part of the Uptown scene on & off for the past decade or so. I first started to spend a lot of time uptown while I was studying Communications at UNBSJ. I’d take the bus home from school and jump off on King St then head to see some bands. I moved back to Rothesay for a short stint once I graduated. It was during this short period I created ICS Creative Agency with my best friend/business partner Zack Spear. We had an office in Rothesay for close to a year but we both felt something was missing. We were bored in Rothesay. We really missed the liveliness of the city so we picked up shop and moved Uptown Saint John.

Name one or two people who you look too for inspiration?
My Dad is definitely someone I look to for inspiration. He’s the man I always strive to be in life and work. As a fellow entrepreneur I can always relate to him. He is such a hard worker and selfless person. He is always there when I need him and more so when I don’t need him. Over the past month he has finally retired and I couldn’t be happier for him and my Mom. My other source of inspiration comes from my two daughters, Lauren and Aubrey. They provide me with such happiness that even on the worst of days I can think about them smiling and move forward.

What is your favorite season, and why?
My favourite season is definitely Fall. It might be just because I am a photographer but I love the beautiful mix of yellows and oranges during the fall months. They provide an exquisite compliment with uptown Saint John buildings which are mainly brick.

What is your ultimate favorite snack food?
I live for old cheeses and blueberries.

Coffee, tea, or other?
Decaf Coffee with 2 cream, always.

Any pets?
I have one pet. His name is Gus and he is a white pug. He snorts, sneezes, and sheds exponentially.

Most guilty pleasure?
I’ve cut a lot of guilty pleasures out of my life in the past few years. Mainly cigarettes and bread.

Worst habit?
My worst habit has to be biting my nails or possibly how long I take to respond to peoples emails. Is 7 days too long?

Favorite Musician?
My music tastes fluctuate based on the time of the year. At the tail end of the winter I tend to go into a John Mayer period for about a month until spring really surfaces. This usually leads into a heavy binge of Canadian progressive metal bands like “Protest The Hero” & “Intervals.”  Once summer arrives I’ll slip into some Steely Dan, SRV, or Jimi Hendrix. Then in the winter I usually stick with The Beach Boys, and April Wine.

What is your Uptown Insider Tip?
Kebab House .49 wings from Wednesday to Friday. It’s a low carb paradise.

Vito’s – Classic, Authentic, Delicious!

In 1972, four young, ambitions gentlemen decided to come to Saint John to open Vito’s – a pizza, lasagna, and spaghetti restaurant.  In 1984, the Georgoudis brothers expanded to uptown and we haven’t been the same since.  Still using the original pasta and pizza sauce, the restaurant takes pride in keeping their signature sauce in their time-honored dishes as well as offering new items, as public tastes and trends evolve.  Recently, Vito’s Uptown has undergone renovations and the feel is both comfortable and stylish.  Located on the corner of Union and Peel Plaza, Vito’s offers dine-in and take out service, and has been known to ship as far as across Canada a time or two.  That is just how unique and delicious their dishes are – the sauce is one of a kind and you will be back for more!

Today, original founder and patriarch Nick visits daily, overseeing and enjoying the business he has known for years as well as socializing with the locals, in style.  The next generation now do the legwork and they are good hometown boys – continuing to honour the quality Vito’s has had from day one.  This year they celebrate 35 years uptown.  Stop by and raise a glass and dine with them.  It may be on the perimeter of uptown, but the food is unmatched, the beer (local and craft) is cold and the wine is fine.

Uptown Saint John cleans up, despite the rain! Uptown Clean Sweep 2019 – recap.

In conjunction with Earth Day, Uptown Saint John – the Business Improvement Association – hosts the 5th Annual Uptown Clean Sweep, April 23, 2019.

Spring is the season, after all, and though we had significant rain this morning, that couldn’t dampen the spirits of all teams who came out to assist in the clean-up.  Enthusiasm wasn’t dampened for the 120 people who exhibited their pride in our uptown neighbourhood by picking up garbage bags full of trash and litter.  Though the morning was a wet one, it was very apparent that the community spirit and pride is alive and well.  This will be, not only our seasonal Clean Sweep day, but a kick-off to the coming months of doing our part in making uptown more beautiful and inviting.  If these folks can do it in the down-pouring rain, we can do it on a regular basis.  Let’s keep uptown ‘clean to the core!’

Special thanks to:
