SUMMARY:ECSQ Play Washington\, Janacek & Schumann
DESCRIPTION:ECSQ play Washington\, Janáček & Schumann \nDate: Friday\, March 28th\, 7:30PM \nLocation: Saint John Arts Centre\n20 Peel Plaza\, Saint John \nTickets | Billets:\nAdults: $25 | Seniors $20 | Students $15 | Sistema Students & Faculty: Free \nAdvance tickets:https://www.tickettailor.com/events/elmcitystringquartet/1371357 \nEN \nThe ECSQ continues their season with three high-energy pieces. The concert will start with Middleground by Shelly Washington\, a Missouri-born composer who blends classical\, jazz\, and American Folk into a style all her own. The concert continues with “The Kreutzer Sonata”: Leos Janáček’s 1st string quartet\, which was inspired by the 1889 Leo Tolstoy novella of the same name. In the story\, two fated lovers fall for each other when playing Beethoven’s “Kreutzer Sonata\,” which was dedicated to the French violin virtuoso\, Rudolph Kreutzer. In a long stream of run on dedications\, the quartet is essentially a piece of music that was based on a book that was titled after a composition that was dedicated to a violinist! The concert concludes with something a bit more straightforward: Robert Schumann’s String Quartet No. 1. The piece is a beautiful balance of classicism and romanticism. \nProgram | Programme: \nMiddleground – Shelley Washington \nString Quartet No. 1 “Kreutzer Sonata” – Leoš Janáček\n \n– Intermission – \nString Quartet No. 1 in A minor\, Op. 41\, No. 1 – Robert Schuman

SUMMARY:Sam Tudor a& Pallmer at the Saint John Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Fredericton’s Pallmer is embarking on a Maritime tour supporting Toronto/Vancouver artist Sam Tudor.  Sam Tudor is an individual\, but also the title of a project involving a large group of friends across Canada. The underpinnings of the songs are genre-less; jazz players join forces with acoustic guitars and gentle synths. What unifies the project is Tudor’s distinct voice: a sandy\, melancholic narrator\, leaning in with confessional and cathartic writing. The Georgia Straight calls the band “a gem\, with a penchant for genuine emotion\, intimacy and everything left field”. \nThis tour will close out two years of tours and shows supporting Pallmer’s debut album “Swimming.”  Nodding to next steps\, the shows will feature sneak peeks into new songs from a forthcoming release. \n\nSaint John Arts Centre – 20 Peel Plaza\, Saint John\, NB E2L 3G67:00PM Doors7:30PM Showtime\n$12 in advance | $15 at the door | pay what you can\n\nFB Link: https://www.facebook.com/share/1J251LEWSX/

SUMMARY:“Winter Kept Us Warm” Film Screening❄️🎬
DESCRIPTION:Join Chroma NB and Canadian Writer\, Chris Dupuis\, for a rare film screening of the original version of “Winter” with a Q&A session with Dupuis to follow. Released in 1965\, Winter Kept Us Warm was a watershed moment in Canadian cinema. Filmed by a group of students on a shoestring budget\, Winter Kept Us Warm is Canada’s first film to depict a gay romance. Directed by David Sector\, a 22-year-old English major with no filmmaking experience\, the film was an unexpected smash\, scoring attention from big-name critics and a spot at the Cannes Film Festival. Sixty years after its release\, Winter offers a uniquely heart-wrenching portrait of queer attraction when being gay was still a crime in Canada. \nThis year will mark Winter’s 60th anniversary\, and author\, Chris Dupuis\, has published a detailed account of the film’s production. \nCopies of “Winter Kept Us Warm” will be available for purchase at the screening.

SUMMARY:ECSQ Concert at the Saint John Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:The Elm City String Quartet is back for ECSQ Season 3! The ECSQ starts their season with their favourite concert formula; something old\, something new\, and a tune to sing on the way home. The concert kicks off with “The Emperor” string quartet by Haydn\, the formative master of the quartet genre. The piece is a favourite classic\, and a great way to refresh our quartet sound after a summer break. We continue with “Plan & Elevation” by Pulitzer Award winning composer Caroline Shaw\, who is one of top movers and shakers in the modern quartet writing scene. We close the concert with Bedřich Smetana’s Quartet 1\, “From my Life\,” a musical memoir written while the composer’s hearing was rapidly deteriorating.
