SUMMARY:Randy Bachman
DESCRIPTION:Few artists can claim to have made a bigger impact on popular music than Randy Bachman\, widely regarded as the “architect of Canadian rock n’ roll\,” His list of unforgettable anthems turned pop-culture touchstones includes such hits as “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet\,” “Taking Care of Business\,” “Looking Out for #1” and “Let It Ride” for Bachman-Turner Overdrive; and “American Woman\,” “No Sugar Tonight\,” “Undun” and “These Eyes” with The Guess Who. Since his first hit in 1965 with “Shaking All Over\,” Bachman has sold over 40 million records and earned over 120 gold and platinum album/singles awards around the world for performing and producing\, and his songwriting has garnered him the coveted #1 spot on radio playlists in over 20 countries. He remains the only one of his countrymen to have been inducted twice into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. \nBachman’s creative fire still burns brightly. During the summer of 2014\, he rifled through his vast catalogue of unreleased songs and knocked out 12 electrifying new tracks of rough-and-tumble blues-rock for a new album\, featuring solo contributions from guitar greats Peter Frampton\, Neil Young\, Joe Bonamassa\, Robert Randolph\, Scott Holiday\, Luke Doucet and the late Jeff Healey\, and a powerhouse rhythm section consisting of bassist Anna Ruddick and drummer Dale Anne Brendon. \nIn 2015\, Randy Bachman\, under the moniker BACHMAN\, unveiled his debut album\, Heavy Blues\, with a raw\, bruising sound inspired by the British blues of the 1960s\, tinged with a strong contemporary vibe. There’s an immediacy and toughness to Heavy Blues that’s impossible to ignore. At the same time\, Bachman’s songwriting craftsmanship shines through thick\, fuzzy coats of distortion. With Heavy Blues\, Bachman decided to take a risk at the urging of old pal Young. “I had a conversation at the Musicians Hall of Fame induction with Neil\, who said\, ‘If you’re getting a new record deal\, don’t make the same old music and call it new. Reinvent yourself\, your writing\, your sound and get out of the box – time to be fierce\, ferocious and afraid. Scare yourself by getting out of your safety zone.” Hungry for a new musical adventure\, Bachman hit on the idea of doing a blues album\, something he’d started with long-time partner Fred Turner but had never finished. “I’ve done blues solos and ‘American Woman’ and things like that\, different songs\, but I’ve never really done a whole blues album\,” said Bachman. “So\, things just evolved.” \nEnlisting Ruddick and Brendon in this new project\, Bachman was determined to step out on a limb. So he made another difficult decision\, going with an outside producer – a rarity for Bachman. On the recommendation of Joe Bonamassa\, Bachman chose famed rock producer Kevin Shirley\, who didn’t make things easy on him. Known as “The Caveman\,” Shirley is one of the hottest producers in rock\, having worked with artists such as Rush\, The Black Crowes\, Iron Maiden\, Journey and Led Zeppelin\, to name a few. In great demand for his studio acumen\, Shirley carved out a small window of opportunity between projects to work with Bachman. “Kevin pushed me past my stop sign and pulled me down a road I never would have gone before\, because I’d produced myself for so long\,” said Bachman. “I thank him for remodeling me.” \nShirley advised Bachman to keep things simple. “I had written so many songs\,” said Bachman\, “and Kevin Shirley would say to me\, ‘This is really great\, but it’s got 12 chords. Take out 10 of them and make it a two-chord song.’” Though Bachman protested that doing so would radically change these songs\, he went along with Shirley’s suggestions\, and the results are gritty and powerful. “In removing some of the chords\, it changed the vocals I was singing and made them more bluesy\,” said Bachman. “It took me to a new simplistic platform\, which we all loved the power of when we glued our parts together.” The result was a more tribal feel\, according to Bachman. The chemistry proved equally solid with Ruddick and Brendon\, who shared Bachman’s appreciation for the hard-edged blues/rock sound. “When we got together\, this thing happened. It burst into flames\,” said Bachman. “It was an instant combustion. When I got the elements together\, it just exploded.” Such is the nature of this fiery collaboration\, one that’s produced such forceful and compelling listens as “Oh My Lord\,” “The Edge” and a deeply satisfying title track – all containing the thumbprints from the rock icon’s past glories. “There’s never a rest in these songs\,” said Bachman. What’s more\, the songs of Heavy Blues all surge with raw emotions arising from personal tumult. “They’re all personal\, because I wrote them while going through tremendous personal crises over the last five or six years\,” said Bachman. “My marriage broke down. A revolution occurred in my life: a new home\, a new band\, a new record deal – so this is about change and karmic circles.” Touchstones such as Cream’s Wheels of Fire and Jimi Hendrix’s Are You Experienced? provide contextual clues as to Heavy Blues’s style. With the guest guitarists each contributing their own unique guitar licks to various tracks\, all written by Bachman\, the project evolved into a collection of “heroes and friends”\, even including a posthumous appearance from Healey: “I had recorded live with Jeff Healey several years before he passed away\,” said Bachman. “I remember what a dear friend he was and missed him and thought how he’d like to be on this album. I asked his widow Crystie and she said she’d be proud and so would Jeff to be a part of this. So I found a song we did years ago in the same key and tempo as one of mine and Jeff’s solo fit perfectly into “Confessin’ to the Devil.” \nIn the end\, Heavy Blues would surprise and delight loyal fans\, while also attracting a new\, younger audience that revels in the stripped-down blues of the Black Keys and the White Stripes. “This project took on a life of its own and is still growing\,” said Bachman. “I was barely in control once it started. I started the engine and then went along for the ride. It was the most instant project I’ve ever worked on.”

SUMMARY:Donovan Woods
DESCRIPTION:with Opening act Kellie Loder\nDonovan Woods was in on the joke when he named his latest release. Riffing on a lyric from a Martin Simpson song (“Never Any Good”)\, Big Hurt Boy is a six-song exploration of how our failures — and our fixations on them — not only shape but enlighten us. \n“I write about them again and again\, just hoping people will still be interested\,” the acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter says. “So the title is poking fun of myself\, that I’m theoretically this big sad guy who keeps getting dumped and writing fucking songs about it.” \nOr you could think of it this way: Woods’ deep curiosity about the human condition is why we so clearly hear our own stories in his. The details differ\, the characters change\, but at their core\, Donovan Woods songs are for and about everyone. \nThat’s particularly apparent on his new EP\, which will be released March 18\, 2022. Trying to capture more of an “undone” quality\, Woods wanted his latest songs to “get back to the feeling that my early recordings had.” You hear that in the spare\, subtle ache of “No Time Soon\,” an acoustic monologue Woods describes as “the story of my whole life.” \nI am a frightened rabbit\nRunning off a map\nOnly loved you out of habit\nI ain’t proud of that\nBut while I do the dishes\nI hum a little tune\nSomeday\, no time soon \n“These are smaller\, less polished songs than the ones I’ve been putting out recently\,” says Woods\, winner of the 2019 Juno Award for contemporary roots album (for Both Ways) and whose global streams have surpassed 210 million. \nStill\, Big Hurt Boy brims with some of the luminous production touches Woods has been adding to this repertoire lately. He wrote the album opener\, “I Won’t Mention It Again\,” on banjo\, which fades into a spectral backdrop of electronic textures and layers of lush harmonies. \nA co-write with Peter Groenwald\, “Leave When You Go” simmers with an R&B vibe backed by sensuous vocals from indie-pop artist Ralph. “A Picture of Us Smiling at a Party Five Years Ago\,” which reunites Woods with Katie Pruitt (who co-wrote and sang on Woods’ “She Waits for Me to Come Back Down”)\, untangles how our memories are often preserved by photos. “It’s about nostalgia\, which is just a memory that doesn’t have any of the stress or dread or anxiety that the real-time experience had\,” Woods says. \n“I Hope You Change Your Mind\,” co-written with David Hodges\, is such an understated tearjerker that you don’t even realize the relationship is over until the last line. “That song is about that back-end portion of a relationship when everyone knows the score but no one wants to say it\,” Woods says. “It’s loving someone so much that you’re not sure how to be mad at them\, so you twist yourself into knots.” \nBig Hurt Boy is the follow-up to 2020’s Without People\, Woods’ celebrated album he made in isolation at the height of the pandemic. Whereas those songs were recorded in a makeshift studio at his Toronto home\, with collaborators working remotely\, his latest release harnesses the electricity of a roomful of musicians laying down tracks live in the studio\, a first for Woods. \nReleased on Wood’s Meant Well label\, Without People was acclaimed as “a nuanced experience” (American Songwriter) and a thoughtful exploration of “fleeting interpersonal moments now under the microscope” (NPR/KUTX). So much of that album’s allure was rooted in how Woods connected with his collaborators and imparted the intimacy so many of us craved during a global health crisis. It was so successful\, in fact\, that it led to a deluxe edition of Without People in 2021. \nAs an in-demand songwriter whose work has been recorded by the likes of Tim McGraw (“Portland\, Maine”) and Lady A’s Charles Kelley (“Leaving Nashville”)\, Woods has been venturing beyond the singer-songwriter scene where he first cut his teeth. Equally at home in folk and country\, he has worked with songwriters such as Tom Douglas\, Lori McKenna\, Brandy Clark\, Ashley Monroe\, Dustin Christensen\, Femke Weidema\, Steve Robson\, and Ed Robertson (Barenaked Ladies). \nWoods’ featured vocals on Dabin & Nurko’s “When This Is Over” veered into anthemic dance pop\, and yet Woods still sounded right at home. On “IOWA\,” Woods found a kindred spirit in Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan for a pastoral meditation on dreaming of a place you know doesn’t exist. \nEach of these collaborations has highlighted a budding truth about Woods: As respected as he is as a solo artist\, he’s evolving and upending our expectations of how his music sounds. His songs have grown more dimensional\, emboldened by new sonic landscapes\, reminding us that classic songwriting transcends genre.

SUMMARY:Crash Test Dummies
DESCRIPTION:It’s been 30 years since the Crash Test Dummies recorded their debut album\, ”The Ghosts That Haunt Me”. Their first album garnered them their first big hit\, Superman’s Song\, and a Juno Award for Group of the Year. Over three decades later\, their sold out 25th Anniversary Tour for multi-Grammy nominated “God Shuffled His Feet” is proof that audiences still want to hear what they have to say. \n“We have been so excited with the response to the 25th anniversary tour that we knew we had to continue the party and celebrate 30 years since we made our first album. We had no idea that fans would be so enthusiastic and we are all a little gob-smacked that we can still play sold out shows to our fans and\, awesomely enough\, their kids\,” says original member Ellen Reid. \nTheir 2022 tour will see them tour North America and Europe\, where fans have been anxiously waiting. The shows will include hits and fan favourites from the band’s vast catalogue. Original members Brad Roberts\, Ellen Reid\, Dan Roberts\, and Mitch Dorge will be joined onstage by Stuart Cameron and Marc Arnould. \n“After a long absence from the road\, Crash Test Dummies have begun to tour again. Not something I’d planned on\, but surprisingly\, at least to me\, there are lots of people who\, years later\, still want to come and hear us. That people continue to return to see the band all these years later still stuns me. It’s very humbling. The folks that come out to these shows tell us their stories and there are many gems: many are very funny\, some are very dark\, and all are very personal. It’s very humbling\, being in the confidence of so many people\,” says lead singer/songwriter Brad Roberts.

SUMMARY:Jeremy Dutcher
DESCRIPTION:Performer\, composer\, activist\, musicologist — these roles are all infused into his art and way of life. His music\, too\, transcends boundaries: unapologetically playful in its incorporation of classical influences\, full of reverence for the traditional songs of his home\,and teeming with the urgency of modern-day struggles of resistance. \nA member of Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick\, Jeremy first did music studies in Halifax before taking a chance to work in the archives at the Canadian Museum of History\, painstakingly transcribing Wolastoq songs from 1907 wax cylinders. “Many of the songs I’d never heard before\, because our musical tradition on the East Coast was suppressed by the Canadian Government’s Indian Act.” Jeremy heard ancestral voices singing forgotten songs and stories that had been taken from the Wolastoqiyik generations ago. \nAs he listened to each recording\, he felt his own musical impulses stirring from deep within. Long days at the archives turned into long nights at the piano\, feeling out melodies and phrases\, deep in dialogue with the voices of his ancestors. These “collaborative”compositions\, collected together on his debut LP Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa\, are like nothing you’ve ever heard. Delicate\, sublime vocal melodies ring out atop piano lines that cascade through a vibrant range of emotions. The anguish and joy of the past erupt fervently into the present through Jeremy’s bold approach to composition and raw\, affective performances enhanced by his outstanding tenor techniques. \n“I’m doing this work because there’s only about a hundred Wolastoqey speakers left\,” he says. “It’s crucial for us to make sure that we’re using our language and passing it on to the next generation. If you lose the language\, you’re not just losing words; you’re losing an entire way of seeing and experiencing the world from a distinctly indigenous perspective.”
