SUMMARY:Mocean Dance: Mercurials / Our Mother’s Road
DESCRIPTION:Two original dance pieces from an exciting Halifax company. Part of the Saint John Contemporary Dance Festival. \nMERCURIALS\nHalifax-based choreographer Lydia Zimmer’s Mercurials explores the psychology of grandiose delusion\, made visible in the elongated golden hands of the dancers. The performers change moods unpredictably\, moving quickly from soft grace to cutting speed and precision. Drawing inspiration from the element mercury\, a toxic metallic liquid\, danger lurks behind a mesmerizing beauty. \nOUR MOTHER’S ROAD\nCo-Choreographed by Mocean Co-Artistic Director Sara Coffin\, and Eskasoni First Nation dance artist Sarah Prosper\, this cross-cultural and cross-generational duet explores the spiritual and emotional qualities of water. Two perspectives meet as the performers process their histories and relationships with water\, and with each other\, moving towards connection and balance. Inspired by the life-giving sacredness of mother earth\, water is our honoured protector guiding us down the flowing paths of Our Mother’s Road – Utawtiwow Kijinaq.

SUMMARY:Phil Carrière at Glass Roots Inc
DESCRIPTION:An evening with visual artist Phil Carrière featuring new works from his recent study in Venice! refreshments and light fare will be provided 5pm to 8pm accompanied by special evening glass demos.\nlearn about Phil’s process and ambitions in the maritimes and find out what drives the artist to travel the world collecting and presenting the images that he uses. \n“I find it interesting that something has been around long enough to interfere with its original design and how it is viewed today. I also appreciate the tension between how it looks to whoever is caring for it and how it looks to me\, because to me\, the most appealing subject is old\, crumbling down\, and falling apart. That’s a problem as they will be erased from our lives one day.\nMy goal is to make them immortal through my art by celebrating the working-class heroes of the past\, and by exhibiting the pride\, patience\, and dedication of those who built the world as we know it today. However\, where the words end\, the music begins. Everything in the universe has a rhythm. Everything dances. I try to convey the emotions and rhythms found in different musical styles into my art.\nIn my art\, accentuated by a unique printing process\, you will find a grand symphony of Beethoven\, the raw sound of Delta Blues\, the electrifying rumble of Hendrix or Page\, and much more. A musical rhythm marks each image\, but it’s so much more than photography. By using different work experiences in the woodworking and printing industries\, I have the privilege of bringing those images to life with my own printing and framing process.”
