DESCRIPTION:It’s Pride Week and that means celebration of all kinds\, especially our Indigenous Community!\nWe have invited Dave Smith has been sharing the stories and history from his Indigenous heritage with Saint John since 2021 with his business First Nations Storytelling.\nHe will be taking us on a 60 minute condensed version of his walk along harbour passage. This event requires walking\, however\, the path is very rollable and flat.\nWe will be meeting up at the Ihtoli-maqahamok – The Gathering Space stage bright and early at 8:15am for our walk which will take place between 8:30am – 9:30am.\nTHERE ARE ONLY 20 SPOTS! Please sign up in advance.\nBelow is an excerpt from Dave’s website:\n“Indigenous influence in the Saint John area is largely overlooked. Prior to the establishment of Canada’s oldest incorporated city\, a flourishing culture already existed.\nDiscover the local history of the Wolastoqi and Mi’kmaq peoples from a unique Indigenous point of view while meandering along the harbor and the Beautiful River – Wolastoq. Walk along a historical portage route and over archaeological sites and become acquainted with the timeless wisdom of our ancestors. Learn how stewardship of the earth should look in a modern world while respecting and celebrating the traditions of the past.\nPrior to the landing of European settlers in what is now called New Brunswick\, thriving cultures existed for thousands of years which lived in harmony with the land and the life that resided on it. Survival on this land depended on ingenuity and knowledge wrought from a sometimes harsh and unforgiving environment.\nPassed down through the generations were the spoken teachings that served as lessons to the younger generations to ensure their survival into the future. DESCRIPTION:St.Mary’s First Nation Chief Chicky Polchies will be joining us to talk about what it means to be two spirited and sharing with us his journey as a 2SLGBTQIA+ chief and his beautiful indigenous culture.\nBiography:Chicky became the first LGBTQ2AI+ chief in Atlantic Canada in 2018. He was formerly a councilor at St. Mary’s First Nation for a period of 13 years. He has also worked within the Band Administration for several years as Community Planner which allowed him to be involved in community activities surrounded with language\, culture\, ceremony and communal celebrations. He is committed to leading his people with dedication\, integrity\, and sincere enthusiasm.
