Saint John Idol XVI

In the spirit of tradition, we are tickled to celebrate our sixteenth season!

Saint John Idol is a much anticipated part of our summertime Wednesdays!

Thousands of spectators arrive each week to cheer for their favourite local talent. This event only continues to grow in popularity with each passing summer.

Over ten weeks, contestants have the opportunity to compete in challenges to win a weekly prize of $250. Also, a grand prize of $5,000 is presented to the finale winner on August 29th.

Analog MVP Camp – Design your app in this fun hands-on workshop!

The Analog MVP Camp is a fun, hands-on group workshop for entrepreneurs who are ready to craft the vision of their new product or service, and begin planning its evolution in a product roadmap, centred around an industry-standard design methodology known as paper prototyping.

Activities of this workshop will include:

• Review your existing business plan
• Focus on your unique value proposition
• Describe the people who will shape your product
• Create a paper prototype of your app
• Draft product roadmap

This workshop will be led by Raven Blue, a user experience designer with 20 years experience in software product design and development. Tickets are $100+HST (purchase here by clicking on this link Eventbrite or the one on Facebook) and include both days of workshops plus supplies.

World Refugee Day Documentary Screening: Human Flow

YMCA Newcomer Connections and the Saint John Free Public Library are marking World Refugee Day by presenting a FREE screening of Human Flow, a film by Ai Weiwei. Join us after work at the library’s central branch, 1 Market Square, and learn more about this global crisis.

The Saint John Newcomers Centre will start the evening with an opportunity for community discussion and networking ahead of the screening.

Over 65 million people around the world have been forced from their homes to escape famine, climate change and war in the greatest human displacement since World War II. Human Flow, an epic film journey led by the internationally renowned artist Ai Weiwei, gives a powerful visual expression to this massive human migration. The documentary elucidates both the staggering scale of the refugee crisis and its profoundly personal human impact.

Captured over the course of an eventful year in 23 countries, the film follows a chain of urgent human stories that stretches across the globe in countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, France, Greece, Germany, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Kenya, Mexico, and Turkey. Human Flow is a witness to its subjects and their desperate search for safety, shelter and justice: from teeming refugee camps to perilous ocean crossings to barbed-wire borders; from dislocation and disillusionment to courage, endurance and adaptation; from the haunting lure of lives left behind to the unknown potential of the future. Human Flow comes at a crucial time when tolerance, compassion and trust are needed more than ever. This visceral work of cinema is a testament to the unassailable human spirit and poses one of the questions that will define this century: Will our global society emerge from fear, isolation, and self-interest and choose a path of openness, freedom, and respect for humanity?

Part of the Saint John International Culture Fest, the first ever International Fashion Show in Saint John offers traditional and modern fashion from all over the world, international food by Sankara, live music and dance by cultural groups.

Enjoy the night of colours, cultures and flavours!

Tickets: $25 per adult, $15 per child. Available at the door.

Yuk Yuk’s Saint John Presents:

Bryan O’Gorman is a professional weirdo who has headlined comedy shows in dozens of countries including England, Australia, Germany, Singapore, Switzerland, Croatia, Serbia, Czech Republic and the USA to name nine. This year he plans on playing in every country on earth, plus the moon (if the spaceship he’s building works).

This past January, Bryan’s second album opened at number one on iTunes comedy charts and remained there for several hours. A live performer since childhood, this joke of a man honed his stand up skills in the legendary Toronto comedy scene and has refined them on stages throughout the galaxy. Catch him now before he dies in a feeble attempt to make it to the moon in a homemade rocket. Of his many credits, a few include being featured on MTV, Much Music, The Comedy Network, Sirius-XM Radio, The Edinburgh Fringe Festival,The Melbourne Comedy Festival, Just for Laughs, National Lampoon Radio, the Montreaux comedy festival and the CBC.
