As president of Freedom Tours & Travel, Ellen Tucker is well known in Saint John as the voice of vacation expertise on CBC Radio One's “Shift.” Before that, you may have recognized her as the host of “All About Travel,” a Global television program.

Previously chair of ACTA (the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies), Ellen has travelled the world for over 30 years as a certified travel counsellor. We had a chance to get to know her a bit better!

Where were you born/Where are you from?

I was born and grew up in a little village, Letete, where the ?ferry for Deer Island embarks. Our big Saturday adventure was to come to Saint John for shopping!

How long have you been a part of the uptown scene?

Freedom Tours first opened in Market Square in 1984. I bought the company in 1997 and in 2004 we moved to 80 Charlotte Street where we are now. I love working and living in Uptown.

Name one or two people who you look to for inspiration?

Firstly my wonderful husband, Dr. Gordon Chapman, a true humanitarian and good soul. In my industry there are so many inspiring colleagues. Our business is all about knowledge and knowing experts in travel around the world keeps me always inspired.

What is your favorite season, and why?

I don't have a favourite because I enjoy the beauty in each and every one!

What is your ultimate favorite snack food?

Covered Bridge potato chips!

Coffee, tea, or other??

Java Moose in the morning, green tea in the afternoon and a great cocktail at Port City Royal after work!

Any pets?

Leffe, our standard Schnauzer who comes to work with me every day, makes our office a happy place!

Most guilty pleasure?

The super desserts at the Market

Worst habit?

Coronation Street.?

Favorite musician??

Leonard Cohen

This past Friday marked the date of Uptown Saint John's first gallery hop of the 2016 summer season! Local galleries, both commercial and public, opened their doors to a crowd of eager art-appreciating Uptown visitors. Many of our local artists had their work on display, with Buckland Merrifield, Cobalt, Citadel, Handworks, Jones and Trinity Galleries all participating in the popular event.

Have you ever wanted to peek into some of the unique living spaces uptown? Now is your chance! ?See the diversity in how people live uptown from urban modern and chic to traditional, all behind the beautiful outside fa?ades?we walk by every day.

The tour begins at 1pm, and until 4pm, you can meander the locations…as many and all that you are able to fit in. ?After the event, ticket holders are invited to attend an exclusive post-tour mingle at the charming and historic Union Club at 125 Germain Street.

(Please stop by the Market Square Atrium on June 4th between noon and 1pm to exchange your ticket for a detailed map of the locations on the tour).

The Academy of Saint John

The Academy of Saint John, a string ensemble of local performers playing modern instruments with baroque bows, was formed in 2014 to act as a chamber orchestra for the Saint John Early Music Festival. The ensemble?s members are Katherine Moller and Ali Leonard (violins), Stephen Mott (viola), Katie Bestvater (violoncello) and Tim Blackmore (harpsichord).

James Kalyn

James Kalyn has built a career over the past twenty-five years as a soloist and orchestral musician of the highest calibre on both clarinet and saxophone. An Associate Professor at Mount Allison University, Kalyn can be heard performing regularly in the region as clarinetist with the dynamic quintet Ventus Machina on saxophone with the Brogue Quartet, with Symphony New Brunswick , and in recitals.?He has been a clarinetist with numerous professional orchestras in the US and Canada including the Windsor Symphony and Orchestra London in Canada. As a concert saxophonist James Kalyn has performed throughout the United States and Canada, as well as in Argentina, China, and Japan. He is called to play and tour with the Cleveland Orchestra and has made a number of solo and chamber music recordings.?

Tim Blackmore

Tim Blackmore?is a graduate of the Montreal Conservatoire, the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and the Guildhall School of Music in London and also the?Founder and Artistic Director of the Early Music Studio of Saint John and the Saint John Early Music Festival, recorder player and harpsichordist.?He directs and performs with the Festival?s Collegium Musicum, Ensemble 18c. and La Tour Baroque Duo ?as well as with other leading New Brunswick musicians and organizations such as Symphony NB (for whom is an advisor on Baroque performance practice) and the Saint John String Quartet. As a member of the La Tour Baroque Duo he has given concerts in Toronto, Montreal, and New York.?

Ensemble 18c

Ensemble 18c., comprised of Tim Blackmore (recorder), Katherine Moller (baroque violin) and Robert Lewis (baroque bassoon) performs? repertoire covering the entire 18^th century from Baroque? composers such as Bach, Handel and Vivaldi to Classical masters like Haydn and Mozart. Since its formation in the autumn of 2015, the Ensemble has given numerous performances in Moncton, Fredericton and Saint John as well as other locations throughout New Brunswick. ?

The Saint John String Quartet

The Saint John String Quartet's active concer-tizing schedule of over 125 concerts a year has taken them throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, Japan, Hong Kong and China. Their most recent CD recording of Jacques H?tu?s String Quartet No. 2 attracted a JUNO nomination in the Classical Composition of the Year category and won “Best Album of the Year” MusicNB while their previous CD won the ECMA “Best Classical Album of the year” award. The group can be often heard on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation radio waves, the Internet and on 4 award-winning compact Discs. Winners of the 2012 Originals Award for 'Classical Music', the Quartet was also honoured in 2012 to receive the Lieutenant Governor?s NBYO award.?
