Welcome Uptown to Home Decor Paint Store!

We are happy to share the opening of Home Decor Paint Store on Station Street – in the Maritime Bus Building by Harbour Station.  Owners are excited to be the only dealer of ‘Country Chic’ paint east of Moncton and Fredericton.  Country Chic Paint was founded from the Dragon’s Den program and is proudly Canadian.  Country Chic paints are clay and mineral based and are entirely non-toxic.  With the resurgence of ‘up-cycling’ and repurposing, or as co-owner Lori explains ‘re-loving’ things, painting furniture and decor items is very popular.

Owners Finn and Lori welcome everyone to their grand opening this Friday, February 1st.  Also, watch for their various upcoming workshops, or stop by to see their products, including items that have been renewed and are for sale, and some beautiful resin decor items.  Feel free to ask them about the history of their window decorating; they have an interesting story.

Welcome Uptown to Visitors!

Union Street is now home to a unique, artist curated gift shop.  Visitors offers a selection of vintage and second clothing and accessories, as well as interesting and artistic giftware and decor items.  Featuring local and international contemporary artists, find a vast array of affordable pieces – all intriguing, all with some creative and artistic detail.  Stop by 145 Union Street and enjoy browsing this cute and eclectic shop, recently renovated by owners Emily and KC.  One of a kind items are continually changing at Visitors and they are eager to accept clothing on consignment, especially if vintage or offers a unique, classic or artsy flare consistent with the vibe of the space.

Inclusivity is a priority at Visitors, where clothing and accessories are available for all genders and bodies.  Owners, Emily and KC, both of settler ancestry, recognize themselves as ‘visitors’ within unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik and Mi’kmaq First Nations, and acknowledge the role of business owners as stewards of the land.  This shop is a much appreciated alternative venue which hosts and will continue to welcome people and items.  Watch for future workshops, music events, book readings, etc.

Welcome uptown!  We value what you bring and look forward to having you in our ever expanding neighbourhood!

Uptown Mug #83 . Amy Barrett-Kay

If you are like most Saint Johners, you probably frequent or have at least visited Picaroons General Store on Canterbury Street.  The beer there is tasty, often changing flavors with the season while continually offering the local favorites.  Another awesome thing about Picaroons General Store is their manager, Amy.  Amy lends a lighthearted and welcoming vibe to the space and is always open to chat or recommend something new on tap.  A dog lover, she is enthusiastic to see the canine visitors at Picaroons too.  Feel free to stop by anytime for a cold one while socializing, playing a board game, or showing off your dog.

We are thrilled to share this Uptown Mug on Amy today.  Let’s get to know her a bit..

Where were you born/Where are you from?

Born and raised here in Saint John 🙂

How long have you been a part of the uptown scene?

I have always loved the uptown scene! I lived here in my early 20’s before moving to Moncton and I have been living and working in Uptown for almost 3 years!

What is your favourite season, and why?

That’s a tough one! I would have to say late Summer into early Fall! The night life, weather, Queens Square Farmers Market and getting to watch the leaves change colour are my favourite things hands down!

Coffee, tea, or other?

Coffee!! And we are lucky to have so many great local coffee shops!!

Any pets?

I recently adopted a rescue dog named Bernie! He came here from Georgia and I could not imagine life without him! I also have two adorable rescue cats Bella and Rudy <3

What is your Uptown Insider Tip? (ex. best coffee, favourite shoe store, tasty dessert, nice view etc. uptown)

We are becoming the best city on the East Coast. We have so many historic buildings being renovated into unique and amazing locally owned bars and restaurants. My new favourite would have to be BunkHaus!! Be sure to take a walk and explore what our city has to offer!!

Catapult Coffee & Studio Now Open On Princess Street!

Step into Catapult Coffee & Studio at 116 Princess Street and immediately feel warm, comfortable and relaxed.  This recently renovated space has been completely transformed by Catapult Construction, another social enterprise operated out of Outflow.

Catapult Coffee & Studio embraces the social enterprise opportunity, making it a priority to employ, mentor and train those in our community who desire to advance their skills and become more employable.  This emphasis on helping the community brings Catapult Coffee beyond the practical nature of a typical coffeeshop – though we must say, this space is no cookie-cutter café.  Charming, cozy, unique and delicious, Catapult Coffee & Studio is already one of our shining uptown stars and we are excited and proud to have you in the hood!

Stop by Catapult Coffee & Studio for a hot drink, and stay awhile.  Be sure check out the creative studio, where all textiles are made by Catapult Creative, while you are there!

Faduma prepares authentic samosas for the coffee shop – these aren’t your typical samosas – they are delicious!!

Uptown Gallery Moves to the Corner of Union Street and Charlotte Street

Jones Gallery, owned and curated by Artist Sarah Jones and her brother, Caleb Jones has recently relocated to the corner of Union Street and Charlotte Street.  This space has undergone a huge transformation over the past few months and having Jones modern, bright and contemporary storefront has lent to the urban and mod feel of this corner in a big way.

Sarah is a beloved Saint John artist, impressively trained and has seen much success.  At this new gallery space, she and Caleb have decided to assist in supporting other artists from Atlantic Canada as well, by integrating select work into the space, along with Sarah’s pieces.  They will also host exhibitions spotlighting only one artist, alternating with the gallery hosting a few artists work of differing styles and mediums.  The space is also available to rent for events.  Contact the gallery for more information on this.

Congratulations on your new location – we look forward to visiting and enjoying often!
