Add to your holiday experience by a shopping day in our quaint and charming city centre. There is nothing quite like the seasonal trimmings uptown – the lights, the shop windows and the holiday feel of the city at Christmas.
Uptown Saint John Inc. and the Saint John City Market have partnered to offer FREE Horse Drawn Trolley rides around King’s Square every Saturday in December, leading up to Christmas, between 1-3pm. The trolley stops on King Square North – so gather the kids, bring your date, or venture out on your own to enjoy a nostalgic ride around the decked out King’s Square.
A little extra to celebrate Uptown Saint John this holiday season! We are expanding our ever-popular Uptown Sparkles one night event to two additional days and evenings!
Join the activities on Thursday (Dec 5th) evening at the newly created Night Time Market. Once again, we will open the nighttime market with live entertainment, food vendors, hot beverages, and fire and ice displays!
Our Friday evening (Dec 6th) will be the same as in previous years, kicking off the weekend with the Mayor’s tree lighting, Uptown Sparkles mascot, trolley rides, carollers meandering the streets and much more.
Saturday (Dec 7th) we will be providing some free swag very much like our springtime Shop the Block. We will be handing out fun swag and our advantage cards while quantities last from the USJI office, 17 Canterbury Street beginning at 11am. Also, with purchases from uptown businesses today, receive a ballot for a chance to win $500 in Uptown Dollars! The more ballots you have, the better your chances are.
Season’s Greetings to all – thank you for sharing your holiday memories with us at Uptown Saint John!
Please see the Uptown Sparkles website for all of the details!

Saint John Energy and Uptown Saint John Inc. a partnership to create Uptown Holiday Lighting
“City sidewalks, busy sidewalks…. dressed in holiday style in the air there’s a feeling of Christmas”
Uptown is certainly dressed in holiday style and one might say the magic happens overnight. Actually, it does. The beautiful, sparkling holiday lighting is due to the very appreciated efforts of Saint John Energy. “The blue and white snowflakes are a joint project with some investment coming from both organizations,” says Nancy Tissington, Executive Director of Uptown Saint John Inc.
SJ Energy provides all of the installation for the uptown seasonal lighting and have been housing and managing the holiday lights infrastructure for the past number of years. “The excitement is in the air and we are thrilled to provide this to the community every year,” says Jessica DeLong, SJ Energy – Manager, Stakeholder Relations.
This year, USJI has started investing in Phase I of a new ‘tree wrapping’ initiative. These brilliantly lit trees will remain shining throughout the year. The future phases will see expansion to other trees on King Street and Prince William Street. Also, new this year – a glowing family of carollers installed on the 2nd level of the historic bandstand in King’s Square. It truly is the most magical time of the year in Uptown Saint John, with all of the sparkling lights lending a memorable ambiance to this most festive and joyous season.

THANK YOU to all how ate out during Chop Chop Fall and to the restaurants for their generosity towards this wonderful community cause.
