Congrats to Hilary Branch on the recent release of her new CD “Down The Road Again.”

Hilary is the Manager at Brunswick Square Starbucks and was a top contestent in the Saint John Idol contest this past summer. She often plays at Magnolia Cafe and sometimes even treats her loyal clientele to a live acoustic performance at Starbucks.

Let's learn a little more about this cool lady with the super smile…

Where were you born?
I was born in Winnipeg.

Where do you work?…and for how long?
I've worked at Starbucks for the last three years now, minus 4 months when I lived in Miramichi and worked in the prisons as a Chaplain's Assistant.

What was your favourite/most interesting performance?
Hmm…Probably some of my more interesting performances were this summer during Saint John Idol. I was definitely pushed out of my comfort zone by playing songs like Hollaback Girl and Bootilicious. But I'd have to say some of my favourites were when I used to busk at the waterfront in Nanaimo, BC with my friends. Those were some good times.

What do you like best about uptown Saint John?
I really love the old buildings and how everything seems to be connected. It's got a great community feel to it.

Who is your favourite musician/actor/actress??
Tough one….Musician – maybe Neil Young…maybe Coldplay. I like a lot of different music. Right now I've been listening to Mumford and Sons, the New Pornographers, and Floggin Molly. It all depends on my mood. Yesterday I listened to a lot of Mozart.

What place on earth inspires you?
Tofino, BC. Surfer village extraordinaire on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. It's where I used to spend lots of holidays as a kid and where my husband, Shawn, and I went for our honeymoon. Best place in the world.

Secret indulgence?
Well, if I told you, it wouldn't be a secret anymore….but in the spirit of honesty, Gossip Girl.

Do you have any pets?
I grew up on a farm in Nanaimo, so I suppose I still have pets there. Two horses, a dog, a cat, sheep and a bunch of chickens. As for my apartment here, I'm happy with it being a pet-free zone.

What do you like to eat for breakfast?
Depends. If it's actually breakfast time, then either plain yogurt with blueberries and granola. If it's a leisurely brunch day, then bacon and eggs and all that good stuff. If I'm at Cora's, I usually go for the 1990's Harvest.

What is your favourite drink?
Grande Nonfat Latte. Or Rye and Ginger with loads of lime.

Spring? Summer? Winter? Fall?
Spring for the blossoms, Summer for the heat, Fall for the leaves, Winter for eggnog. They all have their perks. But if I had to choose, it would be Fall.

Do you have a nickname?
My staff call me HB or just Branch. My mom calls me Hilz. I used to get Hickory for some reason..

Favourite quote?
“The more we let God take us over, the more truly ourselves we become – because He made us. He invented all the different people that you and I were intended to be…It is when I turn to Christ, when I give up myself to His personality, that I first begin to have a real personality or my own.” – C. S. Lewis

What is your favourite hangout uptown?
Honestly, I love my store so much that I hang out there..probably more often than I should. I also like Peppers and O'Leary's.

What book are you reading right now?
Bel Canto by Ann Patchett, and the Shack by William P. Young

What is your favourite thing to wear?
Vests. Boots. Scarves. This would be yet another reason why I love fall so much.

Describe yourself in three words.
Compassionate. Intuitive. Adventurous.

Be sure to look for…and purchase…Hilary's new CD; and watch for her live at a cozy venue uptown.
