Summer students, Alex and Ben bring a fresh energy to the Saint John Arts Centre and uptown Saint John during this eventful summer season. We're going to take a sweet double dip this week as we find out a little more about these guys…
Where were you born?
Alex – I was born in Melbourne Australia
Ben – I was born at the Regional Hospital in Saint John
What was your breakthrough moment/favourite
Alex -My favourite performance would be a rock fundraiser for Haiti
Ben – I don't think I've had a “breakthrough moment,” per se, nor could I really choose a favourite performance. There is always some new dimension that gets
added to each performance.
Where do you work?…and for how long?
Alex – I work at the Saint John Arts Centre, I have been working throughout the summer and look to hold coffee houses throughout the school year
Ben – Right now, I work as a summer intern at the Saint John Arts Centre. I'm there for just another week.
What do you like best about uptown Saint John?
Alex – I like the warm atmosphere with street performers and buskers.
Ben – What I like best about uptown is that everything is so close. You get a small town kind of feeling, which I really enjoy.
Who is your favourite musician?
Alex – Miles Davis
Ben – I could never pick a favourite musician… I like diversity, not one particular genre or artist.
What place on earth inspires you?
Alex – The river and calm when sailing
Ben – On the top of any mountain, there's a flask filled with inspiration.
Alex – Doodling
Ben – Ice cream… I could eat it all day.
Do you have any pets?
Alex – No
Ben – I have a family Rottweiler, but no pets of my own; except a spider nest somewhere in my bedroom wall…
What do you like to eat for
Alex – French toast
Ben – I love to have a fruit smoothie every morning.
What is your favourite drink?
Alex – Espresso
Ben – Water… by far.
Spring? Summer? Winter? Fall?
Alex – Summer, I love lazy days in the still heat
Ben – I could never live with only one. I love when you can feel the seasons changing, not just one in particular.
Do you have a nickname?
Alex – Flea
Ben – I don't have a nickname, but my middle name is Nick, if that counts.
Alex – “After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.” – Aldous Huxley
Ben – I can't remember whether or not I made this up, but I like this alot: “I am because I was going to be and will have been.”
What is your favourite hangout uptown?
Alex – The loyalist plaza on a sunny day
Ben – The whole Uptown! I have a special thing for the City Market, though.
What book are you reading right now?
Alex – The Wayfinders
Ben – I'm reading A History of the Jews… light read, right?
What is your favourite thing to wear?
Alex – Sunglasses
Ben – Pants rolled up and a T-shirt.
Describe yourself in three words.
Alex – Spontaneous, Easy-Going and Calm
Ben – I. Like. Music…
Alex – I would like to develop my skills and expression of music.
Ben – This Fall I'm on my way to Dalhousie University to study music (cello, specifically). After that, who knows?
Best of luck to these two great, talented guys. Alex and Ben, you've added some fun spark to uptown this summer. Much success to you both!
