Nate Guimond is a Saint John native who spreads his wings and expands his horizons in many ways; through creation, relation, truly experiencing life and travel. Nate is special to us here at Uptown Saint John Inc., because he was the first winner of our BYOB Reusable bag contest and initiative in 2009. His work graced the front side of the bags we all still use today. Nate helped us begin a wonderful program which will continue on. Nate also has been known to paint a mural or two uptown, and much more… Let's chat…
Where were you born?
Saint John General Hospital. It was shut down the same month I was born, and later imploded. (No connection to my birth, I hope.)
Do you have any formal training?
No formal artistic training aside from the two years of art class I took in high school. I also have a double major in psychology and linguistics with a minor in philosophy from UNBSJ.
What was your breakthrough moment?
When I discovered I had the power to create my own ideas.
Easy, Star Trek.
Where do you work?…and for how long?
Hmm. For me these concepts are the same: work, play, and learning. But if you want to get a hold of me, Fridays, 9 to 5 at the Saint John City Market will work.
What do you like best about uptown Saint John?
The steepness of King Street.
Who is your favourite musician/artist?
I am not a very visual or musically-minded person, so I guess the art that I keep returning to for inspiration is the writing of Orson Scott Card, or any art that illustrates anachronism or the evolution of ideas.
What place on earth inspires you?
Tenochtitlan. The capital of the aztec empire, before the spanish conquest and future site of Mexico City. (I have never been to either, yet)
I have, and have always had, an obsessive need to collect small bits of “junk” that appear useless to other people.
Do you have any pets?
I am currently in pet limbo. My last pets were a hamster named Picnic, four newborn kittens, some cats, and a rooster. For my next pet I hope to adopt an elderly cat who no longer has a home.
What is your dream job?
An Idea consultant.
What do you like to eat for breakfast?
Cold rice milk mixed with Nesquick chocolate syrup.
What is your favourite drink?
Spring? Summer? Winter? Fall?
Spring in Canada and Winter in Mexico.
Do you have a nickname?
Of all the names I am called, Nate is my favorite. It is short for Nathan, which is short for Nathaniel, which is short for Enoch-Isaac-Nathaniel, but only my mother calls me that.
“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Arthur C. Clarke
What is your favourite hangout uptown?
The tables next to the foreign language section at the back of the Saint John Free Public Library.
What book are you reading right now?
Hmm. I guess it must be, “The way of the peaceful warior” by Dan Millman. A book I found lying around in Mexico.
What is your favourite thing to wear?
The Claddagh ring that my wife gave to me. To me it is not only representitive of our connection, but it is a time-release mood ring that has changed over the years from silver to copper and now it is changing to bronze.
Describe yourself in three words.
An interested-in person.
