Overnight Parking On-Street is now a thing!

We now have more options when out on the town during the weekend.

The area these rules apply to is bounded by King Street & Duke Street, and Water Street and Charlotte Street.  Specifically this allows for overnight parking on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from May 1 – October 31.

Please note, daytime parking rules still apply as usual.

We salute our 2017 Uptown Ambassadors – Allie Ruigrok and Rory Shepherd

It continues to be a super fun summer uptown, and we have two rock star students helping us out: Allie Ruigrok and Rory Shepherd.

This will be Allie’s third summer with our BIA, and she is happy to share her talents with photography, graphic design, event planning, and organization skills with us.  Our BIA Brochure creation, Courtyard Concerts Poster creation, Uptown Advantage Card, Uptown Mug Shots, and #SipsAhoy campaign, are just a few of the projects she has assisted with in significant ways.   Allie will be returning to the University of Ottawa to continue her studies in biomedical science in the fall.

Rory joined us this year and has helped us with various projects as well, including the Paw Party, Germain Street Fence project, and was wonderful at sharing our weekend events.  Rory has finished up his time with us and is heading to Nova Scotia Community College this fall to take design.

We thank both of these great individuals – their energy has been appreciated, their skills and ideas have been very valuable, and we love the youthful vibe they bring to the office and uptown!

Uptown Mug #72 . Corey Bonnevie

One of those people with a definite ‘it factor,’ Corey Bonnevie is quiet and perhaps a bit elusive, only adding to his captivating nature.  Sometimes behind the counter at Backstreet Records, sometimes jamming on the street, sometimes rockin’ on the road – wherever he is, there is a music vibe and chill undertones.  He’s an original – we admire his talents and salute his efforts in keeping our music scene alive and kicking.

Let’s get to know Corey:

Where were you born/Where are you from?

I was born in Saint John and grew up on the outskirts of the Saint John city limits, in a place called Martinon. It was sort of like growing up in a cottage. I spent a lot of time wandering around in the woods. Picture Stand By Me, minus the dead body.

How long have you been a part of the uptown scene?

I’ve been living uptown, since 2011/12, but I’ve been playing music in the city, since 2008ish. My first experience playing for an actual audience were at all age shows at Stone Church, and Melvin’s Wednesday night series called “Summer-Lovin”.

Now, I play in a couple active bands, Little You Little Me, Tooth & the Fang, ER & The Other. I also run a recording studio/Record Label out of my house called Monopolized, where I mostly deal with regional bands. And to top it off, I’m a founder/organizer of the Quality Block Party

Who do you look to for inspiration?
I have two wonderful folks in my life, that have pushed me to be active in the uptown community. First one is my Backstreet boss, Gord Tufts. He’s been running that business for such a long time, 37 years. Especially dealing in the music industry, record stores aren’t easy to keep going and the fact he’s kept his business open this long, means there’s more to owning a business than profits. He’s shown me that people (well, some people) actually care about creating culture and enabling communities to thrive. My second favourite is Jud Crandall. He’s a big part of me keeping up with playing music and pursing a career in the industry. When I was 16, he encouraged my band to play shows and took us under his wing. My taste in music grew and my inner DIY started to take charge.
Who is your favorite musician?
My favourite musician is easily Adam Kierstead. He’ll hate that I mentioned him, but I’ve watched him perform too many instruments better than anyone. Ever.
What’s your favourite thing about Uptown Saint John?
Backstreet Records – It’s always my first stop, when I walk into the uptown centre. I basically Loitered there, until Gord hired me.
