Starting where community is: Reflections from my first month at ConnexionWorks by Allison Thorne

There is such an untapped potential right here in our pretty little city of Saint John- and it is so often overlooked by the city?s native inhabitants. Since moving back home, and reacquainting myself to the once familiar, I am continually amazed by the extent and depth of talent and room to grow. My first month working at ConnexionWorks has provided an insight and deep appreciation for the idea to work for yourself, not by yourself. The concept to bring together people with innovative ideas unleashes a realm of potential that simply does not exist in a traditional office. While I may be a bit biased; I inherently believe that this contrast generates great meaning. It is so important that we talk with people who see the world differently. That is what ConnexionWorks provides so effortlessly with the different faces and stories that walk through the door each and every day.

After my third full day of work, I had the opportunity to sit in on the management meeting with the three co-founders of ConnexionWorks, and it hit me, I was in a very unique situation. There are not many entry-level post grad job opportunities that allow for such potential to have a real influence on organizational outcomes, this lead to an equal wave of excitement, and inevitable nerves.

From November 16-20th, Global Entrepreneurship Week events were hosted daily. It was such a fantastic opportunity to increase my knowledge of not only the prominent individuals within the ever expanding Saint John startup community, but additionally the innovative initiatives happening right here in the uptown core. Highlights included Cathy Simpson?s passionate talk on digital society and its importance in New Brunswick, Propel ICT?s Accelerator program information session and their dedication to emerging local entrepreneurs. In addition, ConnexionWorks first business mixer was a wonderful way to finish off a busy week.

?

To sum it all up, my first month at ConnexionWorks has been better than anything I could have asked for. It has shed light on the reinforced message that was continually delivered during my undergraduate business studies, the true value of building lasting relationships and the power of networking in business. That is why ConnexionWorks is such a fantastic place of budding opportunity; it connects the gaps and breeds an atmosphere of always needed positivity, the true beauty of the world of startups.
